Data Storage Unit Conversion
Digital data is measured in bits and bytes. 1 byte = 8 bits. Common units: KB (1,024 bytes), MB (1,024 KB), GB (1,024 MB), TB (1,024 GB), PB (1,024 TB). This tool converts between all data storage units instantly.
▶Why is my hard drive smaller than advertised?
Manufacturers use decimal units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) while operating systems use binary units (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes). A 1TB drive has 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which shows as ~931 GB in your OS.
▶What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB (kilobyte) traditionally means 1,024 bytes but is increasingly used for 1,000 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) specifically means 1,024 bytes. The same applies to MB/MiB, GB/GiB, etc.
