What is File Hash Verification?
A file hash is a fixed-length string generated by a cryptographic hash function (such as MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512) from the contents of a file. Even a tiny change in the file produces a completely different hash. This makes hash verification an essential method for confirming file integrity.
How to Use the File Hash Checker
Click the upload area or drag and drop a file. The tool will automatically compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes simultaneously. Each hash value can be copied with one click. Use the Verify button to compare a hash against an expected value.
When to Verify File Hashes
Verify hashes when downloading files from the internet (especially ISO images, software installers, and firmware). Compare your computed hash with the one published by the source to ensure the file was not corrupted or tampered with during download.
Understanding Hash Algorithms
MD5 and SHA-1 are fast but considered cryptographically broken for security purposes. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are currently recommended for integrity verification. For maximum security, prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512.
