About Chinese Kinship Calculator
This tool resolves Chinese kinship titles. It has four modes: build a relation chain from ten relation buttons and get the proper title, look up the relation chain that produces a given title, find the kinship term between two relatives (such as what A calls B), and find the pair-relation title describing how two people are related (such as 'father and daughter').
How to Use
1. Pick one of the four tabs: Find Title, Find Chain, Find Between, or Find Pair. 2. In Find Title, tap relation buttons (father, mother, husband, wife, older/younger brother, older/younger sister, son, daughter) to build a chain; set My Sex and Direction (whether they call me or I call them), then Calculate. 3. In Find Chain, type a title like 'bofu' or 'tangge' to see how it is derived. 4. In Find Between, enter two titles and a direction to compute the term one uses for the other. 5. In Find Pair, enter two titles to get the mutual relationship label. Use Backspace, Clear, and the examples buttons as needed.
The Ten Relation Buttons
The Find Title tab exposes ten chain-building relations, each in the spoken form used by the calculator: 爸爸 (father), 妈妈 (mother), 丈夫 (husband), 妻子 (wife), 哥哥 (older brother), 弟弟 (younger brother), 姐姐 (older sister), 妹妹 (younger sister), 儿子 (son), and 女儿 (daughter). They are joined with the possessive 的 (de), so tapping father then older brother then son produces the chain '爸爸的哥哥的儿子' (father's older brother's son). The My Sex and Direction (they call me vs I call them) toggles select the correct gendered and direction-specific title from multiple possible results.
